Administrative / Biographical History

The Costa Rica Coffee Co Ltd was established as a firm of coffee roasters by a Cardiff sea captain Robert Monroe Ernest and his brother Ralph Sanderson Ernest in 1924. The company acquired an office at 14 Dumfries Place, Cardiff, before 1929, moving to Great Western Approach, Saunders Road, by 1949, later at 62 St Mary Street (1955, 1972). R.M. Ernest is recorded as director of the company and as consul for Costa Rica in 1949 and 1955. R.S. Ernest managed a sister company the Costa Rica Plantation Co at 50 Mount Stuart Square in 1949 and 61 Bute Street in 1955. The company established a second outlet in Bournemouth but later split. The present company occupies a former shop in Pontcanna, Cardiff.
