Scope and Content

Letters, cards and postcards addressed to J.A. Cowie from Rosemary Sutcliff. The letters are entirely personal in nature, although they often reference Rosemary Sutcliff's writing, and give an insight into her life, her writing process and her opinions of several of her novels. The letters cover a wide range of topics and subjects, including comments from Sutcliff on various books she has read, including reference to 'Thunder and Lightnings' by Jan Mark; discussion of travel and holidays; references to research and settings for several historical novels including 'Outcast' and the Arthur trilogy; Sutcliff's process of writing, and her progress on various books including 'The High Deeds of Finn Mac Cool', 'The Capricorn Bracelet', 'Blood Feud', 'Sun Horse, Moon Horse', 'Song for a Dark Queen', 'The Light Behind the Forest', 'Frontier Wolf' and 'Blue Remembered Hills'; her script writing work for BBC Schools Radio and Television; and her reaction to being awarded an OBE in 1975.

Arrangement

Letters are arranged in chronological order. Where letters are undated and it has been possible to make a rough estimate of date based on content, letters have been sorted into sequence according to this rough estimate. In some cases it has been impossible to assign a date, and these undated letters appear at the end of the sequence.
