Administrative / Biographical History
The aim of the German Club of Glasgow , (Deutscher Verin Glasgow), was to support the social life of Germans living in Glasgow. The events organised by the Club were celebrations of Christmas, Easter, the Kaiser’s birthday, and concerts. The most significant event was the visit of five German warships to Greenock, Inverclyde in 1898 . In honour of the visit, the Club gave a ball. In 1893 the "German Club of the 12th of July" and the "German Club of 1886" merged into the German Club of Glasgow . Until 1914 the Club had between sixty and one hundred exclusively male members. The most important figure before the First World War was Paul Rottenburg, a chemist, who was chairman of the Club, 1886-1913 . Due to the purchase of a clubhouse, the German Club got into financial difficulties. The club was saved by the donation of £1,000 from the German ex-Consul, Johann Nikolaus Kiep. During World War I, the Club had to stop all activities and most members returned to Germany or were interned. The Club was re-formed in 1925 by Paul Ommer who acted as a trustee. By 1925 the Club had about fifty members including women.

Custodial History
The records were held by the Scottish German Centre, 2-3 Park Circus, Glasgow between 1979 and 1994. They had previously been in the custody of Tods, Murray & Jamieson WS of Edinburgh, solicitors to the German Club Trust.
