Administrative / Biographical History

These records are from Cwm British School, Llansamlet, Swansea. British Schools were founded by the British Society which was established in 1814. The British Society took over the supervision of schools organised on the principles of Joseph Lancaster. He founded schools in which the teacher trained older pupils to be 'monitors' who would in turn teach younger children. This allowed one teacher to cope with a larger number of pupils. A number of British Schools were founded in Swansea and its suburbs in the early and mid-nineteenth century including the one at Cwm. In 1871 the Swansea School Board was set up in accordance with the 1870 Education Act. The Board took over the administration of a number of the schools founded by the British Society, including Cwm School.
