Administrative / Biographical History
This non-party organisation was established in early 1978 following a public meeting in Hull on 'alternative employment' advocating a switch from military to civilian production. There was no formal membership, and supporters simply offered whatever commitment of time and energy they could. The group, which lasted until the mid-1980s, was affiliated to the National Peace Council and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. It worked with other sympathetic groups, such as the Hull Trades Council's Peace Sub-Committee. Basically, the group worked in Hull and its region to promote peace, nuclear disarmament, to halt the arms race, argue for the use peaceful non-military solutions to international conflicts, and so on. Regular meetings were held, one of which included a showing of Peter Watkins' banned 1965 BBC film 'The War Game'.
