Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Layerthorpe Wesleyan Mission opened on the corner of Mansfield Street and Foss Islands Road in 1888 and was part of the York, Centenery Circuit of the Wesleyan Methodist Connexion.
The Mission was expanded in 1892, with a new Mission Hall erected in front of the existing building and the old Mission converted into a school room, with several additional classrooms attached. Designed by Edward Taylor, the new extension would accommodate 950 people in the main Mission hall and the converted schoolroom would allow for 500 additional Sunday School places.
The Mission remained in use until the 1920s and was sold in 1924.
