An oral history of Glasgow Medicine School, compiled by Dr Peter McKenzie, (1914-1994) and Dr Mary McKenzie

Scope and Content

The tape and video interviews were conducted by Mr Peter McKenzie between 1984 and 1994 and transcribed by his wife, Mrs Mary McKenzie. Subjects include Professor Stanley Alstead, Emeritus Professor of Materia Medica, Glasgow University; Professor Donald Campbell CBE, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Glasgow University; Professor Sir Abraham Goldberg, holder of the Regis Chair of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh; Dr Robert T Hutchinson MA pH LLD, formerly Registrar of the University of Glasgow; Professor J Holmes Hutchinson, Pediatrician and former President of the RCPSG; Professor Arthur Kennedy, President of the RCPSG; Mr. A.B. Kerr, former President of the RCPSG; Professor Edward McGirr CBE, former President of the RCPSG, and Dr Joseph Wright, former President of the RCPSG. The collection also includes an interview with Peter McKenzie by Mr William Reid.

Administrative / Biographical History

Peter McKenzie graduated from Glasgow University with the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB, ChB) with commendation in 1938 and the Diploma in Public Health (DPH) in 1940. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Glasgow in 1962 and a Fellow in 1966. His posts included Consultant Physician, Belvedere Hospital of Infectious Diseases and Regional Adviser in Infectious Diseases for Western Regional Health Board (Scotland). He was the author of ‘Intestinal Infections’ in Gillespie and Thomson’s Gastroenterool in 1972 and joint author of ‘Treatment of Pneumococcal meningitis with Cephaloridine’ in the Postgraduate Medical Journal in 1970 and ‘Lincomycins in the Treatment of Bacteriodes Infections’ in the British Medical Journal in 1972. He died in 1994.

Mary Smith Watson McKenzie graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) from the University of Glasgow in 1939 and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB, ChB) with commendation in 1942. Her posts include Hospital Surgeon at the Royal Maternity and Southern General Hospitals in Glasgow and Junior Assistant Physician at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow.
