Scope and Content

The collection comprises of material relating to the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott).

Administrative / Biographical History

Frank Plumley was born in Clevedon, Somerset on 5 May 1875. After attending the local school, he served an apprenticeship as a blacksmith and wheelwright before enlisting in the Royal Navy. He joined the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott), as a stoker, proving useful in building and repairing the expedition's sledges and hardware. He took part in several sledging journeys, including the attempt on Cape Crozier in March 1902, and in October 1903 was a member of the party led by Scott to explore further the routes in the western mountains. Plumley remained in the Royal Navy until his retirement and died on 8 February 1971.
