Main was assistant lecturer in psychology at the University of Strathclyde, 1966-1972, and adviser on educational methods at the Centre for Educational Practice at the University, 1976-1986. He was seconded to the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals, 1972-1976. He later became director of education services and teaching resources at Murdoch University, Western Australia.
