Administrative / Biographical History

The Independent Order of Rechabites began in Salford, England in 1835. It took its name from the Old Testament leader Rechab who instructed his tribe to refrain from drinking alcohol. Applicants wishing to become members of the Order were required to sign a pledge of total abstinence. The first Scottish branch was Caledonian No 73, which opened in January 1838. The branches spread so quickly that to co-ordinate the movement in Scotland an Edinburgh District was created by the end of that year. The Glasgow branch of The Independent Order of Rechabites opened in the 1840s. It is now recognised as a Friendly Society. The trading name of the Rechabite Friendly Society Ltd is now Healthy Investment. http://www.healthyinvestment.co.uk
