David Rees Thomas was born 29 December 1890 to father Lewis Thomas, coal miner and mother Margaret (née Morgans). Margaret died during or shortly after the birth of David Rees. The family lived at Roger Street, Swansea. During the First World War David was a Sergeant in the Indian Ambulance Royal Medical Corps: responsible for setting up field hospitals. He was stationed in Cairo, but moved around the area. After the war, on 8th March 1919, David Rees Thomas married Elizabeth Maud John. The family lived at Brynheulog, Pengwern Road, Treboeth, Swansea. He had written her letters and sent postcards from Cairo during the war. At the time of their marriage, David R. Thomas was a coal hewer. Later, he was a Colliery Ambulance man. The couple had one son: Ronald Thomas (1919-2002). David Rees Thomas died 22 June 1959 at Morriston Hospital.
