The Belhaven Brewery, Belhaven, Dunbar, Scotland was established in 1719 with the Dudgeon and Hunter families controlling the brewery until 1792. Dudgeon & Co Ltd was registered as a limited liability company in 1944 to acquire the business. The company and its seven tied houses were sold for GBP 82,000 to Clydesdale Commonwealth Hotels Ltd in 1972 and its name changed to Belhaven Brewery Company Ltd. It was acquired in 1979 by a consortium that included 'Miss World' impressario Eric Morley, with control passing to businessman Nazmu Virani. Virani sold the firm to former Arthur Bell & Sons chairman and chief executive Raymond Miquel in 1979 but Virani's company Control Securities plc re-purchased the business, including its 41 public houses, two years later. There was a management buy-out led by Stuart Ross in 1993 and the company was floated on the stock exchange in 1996. In 2005 Belhaven was acquired by Green King plc Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk for GBP 187 million.

The collection was previously stored with the rest of the Scottish Brewing Archive at Heriot–Watt University. It moved to the University of Glasgow in 1991. Custody of the Scottish Brewing Archive was transferred to Glasgow University Archive Services in 2008.
