John Evans was the world’s oldest man whose birth could be authenticated reaching the age of 112 in 1989. He was born in Llewitha, Fforestfach in 1877. He commenced work at number 2 Garngoch pit in 1890 at the age of 13. He worked as a miner until the age of 73. He was an activist in the South Wales Union of Miners and a nonconformist. At the age of 108 he underwent surgery and had a pacemaker fitted. He died in June 1990 just weeks before his 113th birthday.
