Scope and Content

Photographs of York hospitals and their staff taken by T. J. W. Hanstock and Joseph Duncan, including York County Hospital and York City Asylum (later Naburn Hospital), 1880s-1928; photograph of Ethel Crombie, co-founder of the Ladies County Hospital Linen Guild, at Bootham Hospital, c.1923; photographs of Union Terrace houses associated with Charles Dickens, late 20th century.

Access Information

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws. 24 hours' notice is required to access photographic material.

Acquisition Information

The archive was deposited at the Borthwick Institute in 1995 as part of the transfer of York Health Archives to the Institute from their temporary home at Clifton Hospital.

Custodial History

The items were given to York Health Archivee in 1992. A further addition was made to the archive in 1994.

Accruals

Further accruals are not expected.

Related Material

The Peter Hanstock Collection of glass negatives, comprising the photographic work of T. J. W. Hanstock and the earlier work of Joseph Duncan, was bequeathed in 1998 to the Yorkshire Archaeological Society and is now held at York Minister Library.
