Administrative / Biographical History

Around 1863 James McWilliam of Messrs J & J McWilliam, Queen St, Glasgow, Scotland, helped, with others, form the Association. The organisation did just as their title implied, and defended and represented the licensed trade, which included publicans  , brewers  , distillers  , and those in licensed trades generally, both in court and out. The Association protested against taxes, laws regulating opening hours, and matters such as appealing for the reduction of assessed rental where a licence holder owned licensed premises. They also entered into a lengthy battle with the temperance movement. Many regions had their own Licensed Trade Defence Association. Although it is known the organisation was still in existence in 1933, very little else is known to date about the association's history.
