Scope and Content

Collection of documents belonging to Matthew Thomas, schoolmaster of Llanfynydd, Carmarthenshire. Contains diaries with detailed records of local weather and wildlife observations. A collection of stock exchange reports, valuations and company prospectuses. Also letters relating to Llanfynydd schools, the local Liberal Party and private correspondences, including many to extended family at New Quay Cardiganshire.

Administrative / Biographical History

Matthew Thomas was a Headmaster at Llanfynydd and Capel Isaac School, Carmarthenshire. A relation of the academic Griffith John Williams and Dr. David M. Williams. He was educated at Barry College with a keen interest in languages, he travelled widely, visiting Moscow, during a Baltic cruise in 1902. An able musician, composer and self taught painter, his diaries contain detailed accounts of the weather, wildlife and fauna of the Llanfynydd area between 1918 and 1931.
