Administrative / Biographical History

Mair & Dougall were wholesale malt liquor merchants, bottlers and aerated water manufacturers in Glasgow, Scotland, since at least 1898 and were the successors to the business of D Hamilton. Their premises were the Annfield Bottling Stores in Annfield Street and Brandon Street and by 1905 also in Sword Street. In 1900 the company claimed to "have always on hand a Large Stock of Beers and Stouts, being the largest bottlers of Bass in Scotland" and they were "prepared to supply both Town and Country Customers and the shortest possible notice." The company's wholesale Malt Liquor Department stored large stocks of a variety of alcoholic beverages, including beers, whiskies and cider. The Mineral Water Department produced a variety of soft drinks such as the "Auld Scotch Ginger Beer", "Sparkling Kola Champagne" and "Ginger Hop".

In 1905 James Calder & Co (Alloa) Ltd (since 1918 James Calder & Co (Brewers) Ltd), Brewers, of Alloa, Scotland opened a new bottling plant at Bath Street, Glasgow, and an arrangement was entered into with Mair & Dougall for the latter firm to be sole Glasgow and district agents for the chilled and carbonated beers of James Calder & Co (Alloa) Ltd. James Calder being responsible for the bottling and delivery and Mair & Dougall for the return of the empty crates. By 1905 Mair & Dougall had also taken over the bottling business of E Brown & Co in West Campbell Street, Glasgow. Mair & Dougall Ltd was incorporated under the Companies Acts 1908 and 1917 although the exact date is not known; but it is likely to have been after 1913. In October 1948 the Real Mackay Strong Ale Co Ltd of Glasgow, Scotland, was set up as a wholly owned subsidiary of Mair & Dougall Ltd and started trading in April 1949. At this time Mair & Dougall were still one of two bottling subsidiaries of James Calder & Co (Brewers) Ltd. The company produced the "Real Mackay Scotch Stout", "Scotch Strong Ale" and "Milk Stout" which were also intended for the export market. However, the Real Mackay Strong Ale Co Ltd did not exist for very long. It became defunct sometime around 1953 as turnover and profits were very small. Mair & Dougall Ltd went into voluntary liquidation in 1962.
