Calvert Richard Jones Estate Papers

Deeds and leases of properties in and near Swansea, 1544-1817; legal papers; 1769-1806, financial records, 1716-1840; and correspondence, 1791-1869.

There were three men called Calvert Richard Jones, grandfather, father and son. The grandfather (who died in 1781) inherited estates which were formerly the property of the Herbert family of Plas-newydd, Swansea, through his wife Elizabeth (nee Allen) which included valuable housing and building land in the town of Swansea, and a considerable area in surrounding parishes. His son married Prudence, widow of Rawleigh Mansel in 1801 and around the same time purchased a newly built house called Veranda in the vicinity of Sketty Hall, Swansea. It was here that his son the third Calvert Richard Jones grew up. He became an accomplished artist, and with Henry Fox Talbot of Lacock Abbey and John Dillwyn Llewellyn, was to take some of the earliest photographs in Wales in the 1840s. A substantial landowner and local rector, he died in 1877 in Bath.
