Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Owens College Act 1870 established the Senate as the supreme academic body of Owens College. Its membership comprised the Principal and the whole body of the professors. Senate was authorised by Court to undertake any matter of academic policy assigned to it, including subjects of instruction and examination, scholarships and prizes, admission and discipline of students, and the appointment of tutors and occasional lecturers subject to the approval of Council. Senate was a junior body to Council in the government structure of Owens, and any resolution made by Senate was subject to confirmation by Council at its next meeting. Council had powers to suspend any Senate resolutions subject to approval by Court.
