Administrative / Biographical History

The West Glamorgan Water Board was established in 1966, succeeding the West Glamorgan Water Supplies Joint Committee. The Board's members included representatives from Swansea County Borough Council, Neath and Port Talbot Borough Councils, Glyncorrwg and Llwchwr Urban District Councils and Gower, Neath, Pontardawe, Ystradgynlais and Vaynor & Penderyn Rural District Councils. West Glamorgan Water Board was responsible for a supply area of 390 square miles, a population of around 390,000, and various reservoirs, treatment plants, pumping stations with several hundred miles of mains. In order to meet the rising demand for water in its area the Board in 1966 promoted the River Towy Scheme. This created the Llyn Brianne storage reservoir to regulate flows in the River Towy. The Scheme was inaugurated on 5 May 1973. Further reorganisation of the water industry led to the West Glamorgan Water Board being abolished in 1974. It was replaced by the West Glamorgan Water Division of the Welsh National Water Development Authority.
