Administrative / Biographical History

The Swansea Music and Arts Club (from ca 1971, the Swansea Music Society) was founded in 1947 to organise concerts of classical music, performed by small ensembles or soloists, for its members. These concerts included performances by such famous artists as Yan Pascal Tortelier. Most concerts were held in the Arts Centre of Swansea University, although some took place at the Brangwyn Hall. Some of the concerts also formed part of the Swansea Arts Festival. By 1978, the society was in significant financial difficulties owing to the rising costs of concerts and artists' fees, combined with a decline in membership. The Annual General Meeting for 1978 therefore resolved that the Society should go into liquidation. This collection of the Society's records covers the period 1969-1978. It chiefly comprises general correspondence and other material relating to the arrangement of performances.
