Administrative / Biographical History

Gower Rural District Council, Glamorgan, was created under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894 and from 1918 comprised the parishes of Bishopston, Cheriton, Ilston, Llanddewi, Llangennith, Llanmadog, Llanrhidian Lower, Llanrhidian Higher, Nicholaston, Oxwich, Penmaen, Pennard, Penrice, Port Einon, Reynoldston and Rhossili. The Council comprised councillors and a chairman and initially replaced the local sanitary authorities. The Council was responsible for a range of local services and was administered by committees and appointed officers including a Clerk and Treasurer. Gower Rural District Council was abolished in 1974 following local government reorganisation and its functions were assumed by an enlarged Swansea City Council.
