Scope and Content

Papers relating to Dr Scudamore's research into cervical cancer, including the work of Dr George Papanicolaou, her research work at the cytology department of Hamilton Hospital, Ontario, Canada, and proposals for the development of a similar unit in the UK.

The series comprises printed works relating to Dr Papanicolaou, newspaper cuttings from the Canadian paper, 'Hamilton Spectator', covering the work of Dr June Scudamore as Director of the Exfoliative Cytology at Henderson General Hospital, Ontario, with details of training of cytology technologists and the success of the cervical cancer screening programme, with 19 black and white photographs of Dr Scudamore and her colleagues at work in the laboratories at Hamilton General Hospital (1963), newspaper cuttings covering the work of Dr Scudamore and her colleagues at Hamilton on cancer screening and cytology, including mouth cancer, hormonal studies, smear tests, the launch of a public awareness campaign, and smoking-related cancers;and correspondence of Dr Scudamore with Professor W Nixon of University College Hospital regarding a possible consultant position on a survey on carcinoma of the cervix, to be funded by the Medical Research Council (1963), and with hospitals in New York, Ohio and the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare relating to cytology research positions available to her in the United States (1963-1964).

The series includes good details of Dr Scudamore's work at the Hamilton General Hospital in gynaecology and cytology, and a testimony supplied by Professor Nixon on completion of her undergraduate studies at University College Hospital (1949).
