Scope and Content

This small collection predominantly contains letters from Fritz Usinger to members of University of Hull staff, written in German, relating to his work and that of German literature more generally. There is also a transcript, in German, of a tape-recording of Fritz Usinger speaking about his poetry.

Administrative / Biographical History

Fritz Usinger was born on 5 March 1895 in Germany and later become a noted writer, poet, essayist and translator. During his career he was, at different times, a secondary school teacher and a freelance writer. He received the George Buchner Prize for his writing in 1946. Between 1953 and 1965 he served as a member of the jury, and later Vice President, of the German Academy for Language and Poetry.

He died on 9 December 1982.
