Administrative / Biographical History
John Buchanan Barr was educated at Dumbarton Academy and Glasgow University, graduating M.B., Ch.B in 1932 and gaining an M.D. with Commendation in 1938, his thesis being "The Remote Effects of Puerperal Sepsis". Prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, he was in practice in the West End of Glasgow. He was commissioned in the R.A.M.C. at the beginning of the war in 1939. He saw service in units in the south of England before serving in North Africa in 1942 where he was attached to 78 Division which gained great distinction in the fighting from Algiers to Tunis and afterwards in Sicily and Italy. He was awarded the M.B.E. in recognition of distinguished services in Africa. Following the war he returned to practice in Glasgow. He died on 8th June 2003.
