Scope and Content

  • Financial Records 1893-1898.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Scottish Licensed Trade Defence Association, Edinburgh, Scotland, was established in 1879, enlarged in 1890 and reconstructed in 1919 and 1922. The Association was the central organisation of the retail trade of Scotland, with objects similar to those of the National Trade Defence Fund of London, England, to the Committee of which it sent representatives. Its ordinary income was obtained by means of capitation grants from their affiliated associations (c 80 in 1925 and c 65 in 1935). Its subscribers included members of all retail sections of the trade. By 1895 (until 1950) it also administered the more important funds of the Scottish National Trade Defence Fund, which had practically no separate existence.

The association changed its name to Scottish Licensed Trade Association in c1956. The Scottish Licensed Trade Association was still in existence in 2002.
