Administrative / Biographical History

The Swansea Canal Society was formed in 1981. Run by a group of volunteers, it became a registered charity in 2004. The Society's aims are:

The restoration, reconstruction, preservation and maintenance of the Swansea Canal

The conservation of its natural character as a navigable inland waterway for the benefit of the public.

To advance public education in the history and use of the Swansea Canal.

To provide or assist in the provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure time activities of the public, in the interests of social welfare, with a view of improving their conditions of life.

The Society attempts to achieve these aims by lobbying the canal owners, local councils and other public bodies. It also assists the area's local authorities with their urban regeneration schemes in the canal-side communities.

The Society carries out practical restoration projects to improve the canal, and produces a quarterly newsletter which is distributed to all members. It holds monthly committee meetings and organises workparties throughout the year to improve the canal environment, along with social events for the benefit of the members.
