Administrative / Biographical History
The Aimhigher scheme was a government funded project that covered initiatives related to widening participation in higher education in the UK amongst students with good grades and no family history of university study, particularly among students from non-traditional backgrounds, minority groups and disabled persons. It was a joint project between the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
The scheme was created in 2004 by the merger of two earlier initiatives, Partnerships for Progression (P4P) and Excellence Challenge. It ran until the end of the academic year 2010/11, and involved partnerships between universities and colleges, schools, the careers and apprenticeship services. It operated in England on a national, regional and area basis, including:
A range of projects at national level
Nine regions undertaking cross-regional activities (Although this regional structure ended in July 2008)
45 areas where most of the planning and delivery takes place
