Unsigned letter from Joule to the Times in which he criticises an article in Saturday's edition of the paper on "Electro magnetism as a motive power", believing it will give rise to "sanguine expectations which must be ultimately disappointed". Relates his own experiences, and his experiments in 1843 using a electromagnetic engine [battery] to produce energy from zinc. A version of this letter was published in the TimesThursday, Dec 31, 1857; p. 5, and was dated "29 Dec 1857, Oakfield, Manchester".
