Papers created by Darrell during his early years, and by his parents and other family members. Includes drawings created by Darrell Buttery as a child, menu for the York Highflyer, flyers for performances by the Guisborough Parish Players (1958 and 1959), telegram from Darrell to his parents to say he had passed his teaching practice (1964), letters between family members, school reports for Darrell (1948-49), Ministry of Food ration book 1952-1953, Institution for Reverend H M Atterton to the parish church of Huntington (1952) and vicarages of Wressle (1955) and Rosedale (1962), papers relating to the Guisborough Grand Lodge of Freemasons, Grangetown Wesleyan Sunday School award for regular attendance issued to Ruby Wiskard, National Registration Identity Card in the name of Thomas Buttery, Soldier's pay book issued to Thomas Buttery, North Riding of York Constabulary Special Constable card for Thomas Buttery, driving licences for Catherine Ruby Wiskard / Buttery (1930-31 and 1947-48) and newspaper cuttings relating to family marriages and deaths.
Black and white mounted and unmounted photographs. The images are of individual sitters, family groups (including family marriages), school groups, gravestones and landscape scenes. Some of the images are mounted onto postcards, but only a small number of the images contain labels identifying the locations or sitters. Two of the images are of a staff Christmas party dated 1952.
Personal correspondence, including Christmas cards, received from Darrell Buttery from friends and associates.
Hardback scrap book containing cuttings from auction catalogues relating to items with a York provenance. Includes individual descriptions of items and the auction estimate prices. The volume has some loose correspondence inside the front and rear covers.

Administrative / Biographical History

Darrell Buttery was born in 1941 and is a leading member of the York community. He taught English in schools in and around York for many years, but was also noted for his work for the City particularly through local societies. He was a member of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society and the York Georgian Society and was President of the York Civic Trust.

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws. 24 hours' notice is required to access photographic material.

Acquisition Information

The archive was deposited at the Borthwick Institute by Mr Buttery in 2004. Further additions were made to the archive in 2009, 2013 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2022.
