Mary Ann Ritchings was born at 44 Oxford Street, Swansea 20 July 1877 the daughter of John Ritchings (herbalist) and Mary Ann. Mary studied at a private school in Swansea before attending Glasgow University where she obtained the degrees of M.B. Ch.B and L.M at Dublin. Mary was Swanseas first female doctor and opened a practice at the age of 25 at her home, St Helens Villa. During the First World War she was the medical officer at the military hospital on St Helens Road and was later awarded the O.B.E. for her work.
