Comprises volumes of private and semi-official letters, chiefly on Indian affairs, that Mountstuart Elphinstone received during his Commissionership of the Deccan (1818-1819) and his Governorship of Bombay (1819-1827), from correspondents in Europe and India, including his brother James Ruthven Elphinstone, General Lionel Smith, Captain Henry Dundas Robertson, Captain Robert Close and Major Henry Pottinger. Items in Persian are awaiting further investigation to determine their exact language
