Administrative / Biographical History
St Mary's Home Charity (1962-1988), formerly 'The Shelter' (to 1943) and St Mary's Home (1943-1962). Merged with Heworth Moor House (1988)
St Mary's Home Charity was originally a home for girls called 'The Shelter' run by the York Penitentiary Trust in Bishophill, York. In the 1920s the home moved to Peckitt Street, York, and became a remand home for girls awaiting trial or on probation. In 1943 The Shelter moved to new premises on Huntington Road, York, and was renamed 'St Mary's Home', becoming affiliated with the Diocesan Association for Moral Welfare. The home closed in 1962 and the funds released by the sale of its property were used to found the St Mary's Home Charity, whose aim was to further the preventative and educational work amongst girls. The trustees sought an amalgamation with the York Children's Trust in 1981, which was rejected by the Charity Commission. However, in 1988 the charity was successfully merged with Heworth Moor House.
