Administrative / Biographical History

Hay & Macleod Ltd (company number: SC093693) were Glasgow based whisky brokers established in 1942. Together with another broker, W & S Strong Ltd, Glasgow, they identified a gap in the market for a new malt whisky and began looking for a suitable location to build a new distillery. They chose Speyside and being impressed by the quality of the spring water at Tomintoul, selected a site near the Ballantruan Spring, on the east of the River Avon. The Tomintoul-Glenlivet distillery, built in 1964-1965 was the first distillery to be financed entirely by Scottish capital.

In 1973 Hay & MacLeod Ltd along with W & S Strong Ltd, Tomintoul Glenlivet Distillery Ltd and Fettercairn Distillery Ltd, which had been bought by Tomintoul in 1971, was acquired by SUITS (Scottish and Universal Investments Trust Ltd), the owners of whisky blenders Whyte & Mackay Ltd. Hay & MacLeod was again incorporated as a limited company in 1985 and as of present day is an active, non-trading company under Whyte & Mackay Ltd.
