Administrative / Biographical History

Neath Borough Council was founded in medieval times and reformed following the Municipal Corporations Act, 1835. Originally sharing the same boundaries as the parish of Neath, the borough was extended in 1922 to take in the parish and former urban district council of Briton Ferry, along with the Melincryddan area. Associated with Neath Borough Council was Neath Urban Sanitary Authority, succeeded by Neath Urban District Council in 1894. This body oversaw sanitation within the Borough of Neath and its council was composed of members of Neath Borough Council. The district saw an increase in industrial activity in Victorian times, resulting in the construction of railways and docks to carry coal, raw materials and finished products to and from the iron, steel, tinplate and copper works in the area, and to the docks at Briton Ferry and further afield. Neath Borough Council took an interest in the passage of the various railway bills through Parliament.
