Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
This company's origins can be traced back to around 1788 when William Don established a linen merchants and manufacturers business in Forfar. In 1865 the company of Don Brothers, Buist was formed when the Don business amalgamated with that of A.J. Buist.As Don Brothers, Buist & Co Ltd, the business amalgamated with Low Brothers & Co (Dundee) Ltd, a merchant house, in 1960, although both companies continued to trade under their former names. The company also expanded by taking over a number of other textile businesses, including J & J Smart (Brechin) Ltd and Moffatt & Son Ltd, as it became one of Scotland's most important textile firms.Don & Low (Holdings) Ltd was formed in March 1987 when Don Brothers, Buist plc reverted to being a private company. This followed the companys being taken over by Shell UK Ltd.
