Administrative / Biographical History

Rak Nandwani was educated in Bristol and graduated in medicine at the University of London in 1985. During his student elective in 1983 and as a house officer in 1985 he saw some of the first HIV/AIDS patients. Dr Nandwani first worked in Genitourinary Medicine in 1987 at the Middlesex Hospital in London and later trained in the specialty there and at the Chelsea & Westminster and King's College Hospitals. He was appointed Consultant in GU/HIV Medicine and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Glasgow in 1997. He later became Clinical Senior Lecturer in Glasgow in 1997. He later became Clinical Director and jointly led the establishment of the Sandyford Initiative which opened in 2000.

Dr Nandwani was a member of the expert advisory group which drafted Scotland's sexual health strategy. Dr Nandwani was elected as an inaugural Board member of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV, and has also served as Lead Clinician of the West of Scotland sexual health Managed Clinical Network. Dr Nandwani has held several senior medical positions including Speciality Adviser to the Chief Medical Officer, Clinical Adviser to NHS Quality Improvement Scotland, and the National Training Programme Director for Genitourinary Medicine in Scotland. He has also been involved in the development of UK national guidelines and service standards for the specialty.
