Administrative / Biographical History

The Swansea Art Society claims to be one of the oldest art societies in existence and almost certainly the oldest in Wales. It traces its roots back to a committee meeting held in 1886. At this time however, the Society was called the Swansea Sketching Club. It became the Swansea Sketching Club and Art Society in 1895 and by 1898 it came to be known as the Swansea Art Society, the name it has continued to use until the present day. It was founded for two reasons: for the appreciation of art and the study/practice of art. For the Society 'art' encompassed not just the fine art but ceramics and weaving as well. The collection contains minutes of Society meetings from the time of its creation, catalogues of annual exhibitions organised by the Society from 1888, photographs of Society members and newspaper cuttings highlighting the Society's successes over the years.
