Scope and Content

A collection of 23 items consisting of two eisteddfod essays on the subject of the history of Dyffryn Nantlle quarries, co. Caernarfon by John Hughes (Alaw Llyfnwy) and Llenor Llyfnwy; leases and assignments illustrating the quarrying activities of John Lloyd Jones and others, including Mr H. J. Standly of Middlesex, at the Glandulas and Llwyngwern slate quarries on the Montgomery-Merioneth border; balance sheets of Dorothea Slate Company; prices and particulars of Tal-y-sarn slate quarries; ledger regarding the Pen yr orsedd quarry; the papers of Evan Roberts regarding the buying and selling of Dyffryn Nantlle slate and regarding his activities as part-owner of the Gwernor Slate Quarry.

Administrative / Biographical History

Mrs Robertson of Penbryn, Edern, co. Caernarfon was the granddaughter of Mr Ellis James of Vaynol, and for some years she held shares in the Dorothea Slate Company.

Evan Roberts, of Beatrice Terrace, Tal-y-sarn, co. Caernarfon was the brother of R. Silyn Roberts. H,e for some time, acted as middleman for the buying and selling of Dyffryn Nantlle Slates and for a period was part-owner of the Gwernor Slate Quarry, co. Caernarfon.

John Lloyd Jones of Nantlle had an active part to play in slate quarrying ventures on the Montgomery-Merioneth border.

Custodial History

A group of papers collated from four different sources. Papers 3-11 have been acquired from the descendants of John Lloyd Jones, one of the sons of the Rev. John Jones of Tal-y-sarn. Papers 1, 2, 12 and 13 have been obtained from Mr Llew Owain of Caernarfon and R. Silyn Roberts. From Mrs Robertson of Penybryn, Edern, granddaughter of Mr Ellis James of Vaynol papers 14-18 were received. R. Silyn Roberts donated papers 20-23 following the death of his brother in 1916, Evan Roberts.
