Administrative / Biographical History

David Rhys Grenfell was born in Penyrheol on 27 June 1881, the son of William and Ann Grenfell. He was educated at Penyrheol Elementary School and Technical Classes. In 1905 he married Beatrice Morgan and had one daughter, Eileen. He worked as a miner from the age of 12 years and continued until he was 35. He undertook studies in Mining and allied subjects and later qualified as a colliery manager. He became Member of Parliament for Gower Division in 1922 and remained in position until 1959.
