Administrative / Biographical History

The two year course established in 1934 was designed for students who had served an apprenticeship with the Blackburn Aeroplane & Motor Company which had been established in 1916 (it subsequently became a part of British Aerospace) based in Brough. In the first two years the Diploma course ran there were 12 students. In total there were only 57 aeronaut students (complete list is in U DX238/5)

In December 1994 the holders of the University's Diploma in Aeronautics were awarded their degrees - following a campaign that started in the 1970s to upgrade their original qualification.
