Scope and Content

The correspondence and papers of Colonel Samuel Bagshawe constitute a nationally important source for British military history of the mid-eighteenth century, and for studies of British engagement in India during this period. There are over two thousand items of correspondence concerning military, family and other matters (BAG/2/1-3), and over 1750 papers relating to Bagshawe's military career in India and elsewhere, and to personal, family and estate matters (BAG/2/4-7).

The material is divided into two series:

BAG/2/1-3: Correspondence, 1712-69;
BAG/2/4-7: Papers, c.1730-62.
