'Book 1. Autobiography'

Scope and Content

This volume, marked 'Book 1 Autobiography' on the outside is entitled ‘Measure of success: autobiography of a teacher’, by Marjorie Reed (later Marjorie Hibbert) in the inside cover. There are additions and editing to the typed record. It covers the teaching career and experiences of Marjorie Reed as teacher, Deputy Heamistress and Headmistress in a number of different schools with extensive information on the activities and lessons undertaken. Many of the identifying details have not been included, but references to Fountain Road Girls' School would appear to refer to Hull. Accounts of pupils from this school in 1877 have been taken from the original log books. Mrs Reed's time at Royal Wanstead School, Hyde Hall near Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire is also referenced. Some case studies of her pupils have been included. It also contains details of the negative reactions Mrs Reed encountered as a married working woman, the conditions of the pupils and the circumstances in which they lived and the behaviour of teachers that she worked with.

Loose items found in the volume have been removed and can be found at U DX288/2.
