Administrative / Biographical History

William Barr Stirling was born on 8 August 1914. He was educated at Glasgow Academy and graduated MB, ChB from Glasgow University in 1937 and was admitted a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in both Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1948. He joined the Royal Navy in 1939, took part in the Norwegian campaign and also helped establish the naval hospital in Ceylon. On returning to Glasgow he joined the staff of Glasgow Royal Infirmary, working with Mr Arthur Jacobs, whom he succeeded as chief in the urology department in 1964. He remained in charge of the department until 1977. His book, Aortography, published in 1957, became a classic of its day.
