Administrative / Biographical History

The Glasgow University Physical Society was founded in 1884  at the University of Glasgow , Scotland. The purpose of the society was to facilitate the discussion of scientific subjects in general, to communicate members' original research and to improve relations between staff and students. Membership was open to all interested in scientific progress including past and present students, staff and distinguished scientists. Lectures were given on interesting and obscure branches of science and visits were arranged to places of scientific interest in the local area. There was also a library of books available to members. The society also had sports teams and arranged social events, such as dances and pub crawls. The major social event was the celebration of Einstein's birthday. The Society is still in existence [2007] and continues to host scientific and social events throughout the University's academic year.
