This collection records the names and literary interests of immigrants to Huddersfield, mostly from Europe, in the mid-nineteenth century. The collection comprises rules, minutes (1851-1870), membership records (1851-1870), financial records (1851-1870), catalogues of stock relating to books in French, Spanish, German and Italian (1851-1866), letters (1851-1870) and miscellaneous (1855).

The Huddersfield Foreign Library Society, formed in 1851, was incorporated into the Huddersfield Technical School and Mechanics' Institute in 1883-84.
