Administrative / Biographical History
Lawrence Edward Grace Oates was a member of the shore party of the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (leader Robert Falcon Scott). He was included in the five man polar party and with Scott, Edward Adrian Wilson, Henry Robertson Bowers and Edgar Evans attained the pole on 17 January 1912. He died during the return journey.
Apsley Cherry-Garrard served as assistant zoologist, his account of the expedition was published in 1922 entitled The worst journey in the world.
