Administrative / Biographical History

Alexander Lowson Young was born in Montrose, Angus, on 13 March 1904  . His father, John Young, was an art teacher, but died during his second year at university. Alexander attended the University of Glasgow from 1920-1925, taking classes in Mathematics, Natural Philosophy and Chemistry in his first year; Mathematics (Intermediate Honours), Logic, English and French in his second; English, Mathematics and Natural Philosophy and Natural Philosophy Laboratory in his third year; Natural Philosophy and Natural Philosophy Laboratory, and Chemistry and Chemistry Laboratory in his fourth, and Chemistry and Education in his fifth and final year. He graduated with an MA in June 1923  , a BSc in November 1925  and a Diploma in Education in 1929  . He subsequently went on to became the Director of Education for the County of Aberdeen from 1945-1968  and was awarded a knighthood for his work in 1969. He died in Aberdeen on 11 July 1995.
