Further Estate and Official Papers of the Newcastle family of Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire, 1216-1990, in the Newcastle (Clumber) Collection

Scope and Content

Title deeds and settlements make up over half the collection (Ne 6 D). The largest section of these relates to estates in Nottinghamshire. Most of the Nottinghamshire deeds concern property transactions of the later Dukes of Newcastle under Lyne, though there are sections where the deeds are much earlier, dating back to the time of the Cavendish and Holles forebears. Other earlier sections within this deposit include a significant number of deeds relating to the Aldborough and Boroughbridge properties in Yorkshire. In addition, there are deeds for estates in the counties of Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire to name a few, and for the estates which descended through the Hope line in Ireland and in Surrey. The deposit also includes family wills and settlements with related documentation, from the time of the 2nd Duke of Newcastle under Lyne onwards.

The deposit contains accounting papers - ledgers, vouchers, reports and so on - and also inventories, genealogical papers, legal papers and manorial records. General estate records include correspondence, enclosure awards, rentals, agents' reports, and sale particulars. There is also a section of company papers, primarily for the London and Fort George Land Company Limited, but also relating to the Harrowlands Holding Company, the Harrowlands Investment Company and the Hope Estates Company.

Maps and plans (Ne 6 P) form a significant grouping within this deposit. The series consists of around 1,000 items, ranging in date from 1765-1968 but with most of the items relating to the first half of the 20th century. Nottinghamshire is by far the most heavily represented county, though there are also plans for Berkshire, Derbyshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Kent, Surrey, Somerset and Wiltshire.

The inventories (Ne 6 I) contained within the deposit are mostly relating to the chattels of the later Dukes of Newcastle under Lyne. This series also includes a large number of sale catalogues from the 'Clumber Sales' when the Newcastles left the former Nottinghamshire heartland of the estate and relocated to Wiltshire.

Administrative / Biographical History

A comprehensive administrative history for the Newcastle estates is available in the higher level description covering the whole archive of the Dukes of Newcastle (Ne).

This collection comprises a large volume of estate records which were held by the Newcastle Trustees in a depository in Wiltshire until the late-1990s. The majority of the records are estate papers from the various estates belonging to the Dukes of Newcastle under Lyne which were inherited from Clinton (Earls of Lincoln), Pelham, Cavendish, Holles (Earls of Clare) and Hope forebears and relations. Also included are a smaller number of papers relating to individual family members. The estate and official papers form a sub-fonds within the Newcastle (Clumber) Collection. They are in many cases related to series within the main Newcastle archive.

Arrangement

The papers are arranged chronologically, by series and by record type.
