Administrative / Biographical History
The documents listed below relate to the various companies which during the period 1837 to 1883 held the Ynys-Cedwyn Ironworks, and progressively worked ironstone and coal deposits in the area to the north and east of Ystradgynlais. There had been an iron furnace at Ynys-Cedwyn possibly since since the 17th century. It was leased in 1837 to George Crane, and subsequently developed by Sir Charles Price and Joseph Marryat, under the name of the Yniscedwyn Iron Company. In 1864, the company was floated on the Stock Exchange. It went into voluntary liquidation in 1869. A new company was formed in 1870, the Yniscedwyn Iron, Steel and Coal Company Ltd., which later found itself in financial difficulties, and was wound up in 1877 after an action in Chancery. Its successor was the Ynys-Cedwyn Company Ltd. It went into liquidation in 1881. There are leases, assignments and mortgages of the ironworks, adjacent properties, and minerals (iron and coal mines), largely in the parish of Ystradgynlais, but with some properties in adjacent Llangiwg parish; also copies of wills and certificates; copy resolutions of the company directors, and correspondence.
